Update
GDC was awesome and I got a LOT of good input from industry professionals. Lots of different points of view on what the game companies look for. Some said to model more assets and others to focus on more stylized environments. Also, to not try and make a giant environment because it’s too hard to populate. I agree with all of them.
Since I already have the whole island done I’ll just add a couple more things to make it more interesting and then start a new project. The original idea for these 2 projects (the sci-fi room and the island) were to learn the essentials of UDK and build a portfolio. I’ve made plenty mistakes, but I think I’ve learned a LOT from them. Modular building, sticking to the grid, using (and re-using) larger textures are some of the things I’ve learned by doing and failing/succeeding.
Here’s an update on the island scene.
I plan on finishing it tonight or tomorrow and then starting on a new one. I’ve had two ideas for a while now, which would combine what I’ve learned so far. The first is a crime scene in an alley; the second, a rope bridge over a chasm. I have both of them sketched out, just got to plan out what to model and how to model it.
Done
Beach scene completed. Here are some shots. Sure, it might need some tweaks here and there but the plan is to have a varied portfolio; and soon.
update
Sort-of finished the boat (there’s some mirroring but I’’m planning on fixing that. Just wanted to see what it would look like:
Texture test
Trying out a texture for the rustic fishing boat. Which was inspired by a Peruvian “Peque Peque”.
boat
working on some props to put in the world.
gotta add some seats and model some oars.
Update 2
Added some grass to test out what it would look like.
Still needs work, but learning about deco layers and such is the main thing here. The idea is to make this a desolate island first, then slowly add “life” to it. Some huts, a couple of fishing boats perhaps… turn it into a place people might live in…
Update
Updating after a long break… for some reason, the audio works fine on my computer, but every time I upload it to youtube, it messes up…. so I ended up replacing it with a free to use songs from youtube itself.
Outdoor environment
I’ve been playing around with a outdoor scene for a couple of days now. So far it’s been fun. The plan is to make the environment first, make it look nice, and then slowly add props to complete it. This is a video of what the environment looks like so far (something went terribly wrong with the audio when I uploaded it to youtube, so try and picture footstep sounds on both dry land and wet)
Apples and….pears?
Quick render of a prop for my next project. I was trying out using Reactor in 3dsmax to make piles of stuff.
